On October 1st, the legal counsel for attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla released a strong declaration, unequivocally denying the claims that have been widely reported by several newspapers in Panama.
The defense described these articles as harmful assaults fueled by personal financial motives, aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional standing and personal honor.
Castillo’s defense argues lack of grounds and violation of rights
Carlos Carrillo, a part of Castillo’s legal representation, asserted that the allegations are baseless and designed to hinder the professional advancement of the young attorney and her associate. He highlighted that these attacks are driven by hidden economic interests that intend to benefit from tarnishing Castillo’s reputation.
The defense highlighted that this is not the inaugural occurrence of media intimidation faced by the attorney. They referenced a comparable event in 2021, when a Panamanian publication disseminated false details concerning an alleged arrest of Castillo, which was later refuted.
Half-truths and breach of confidentiality
The legal team stated that both the present accusations and those from 2021 are based on “partial truths,” distorted to damage the professional standing of attorney Odila Castillo. Additionally, they claimed that the released information violates confidentiality standards, as part of the inquiry stems from a previously resolved family issue.
Confidential details, such as immigration records and tax filings, were also revealed—information that, according to the defense, was acquired through illegal means.
Unlawful surveillance and ongoing lawsuits
The defense revealed that Castillo has experienced GPS monitoring, representing a blatant invasion of her privacy and a type of illegal surveillance. Carrillo claimed that his client’s basic rights, as protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant legislation, have been violated.
He declared that all requisite legal measures will be taken to determine accountability for the damages already suffered as well as those that may be inflicted in the future.
